That Nintendo 3DS is so March 2011. Instead of picking up Nintendo’s latest handheld, why not make your own retro handheld console? User Doug104231 over at the Modded by Bacteria forums has put together a pretty awesome looking portable NES console.
According to Hack a Day, Doug initially planned to use a Nintendo on a chip (NOAC) board, but then decided to use a real Nintendo motherboard. Then Doug accidentally fried his Nintendo motherboard and went back to using a NOAC board with upgraded wiring.
The handheld console looks awesome and has an authentic feel to it, perhaps because Doug used a disassembled original NES controller in the making of the case. You can read Doug’s 23-page build log over at the Modded by Bacteria forums, or you can skip straight to the unveiling on page 22.
As you can see, Doug’s handheld NES not only looks pretty, but it also plays some mad 8-bit old-school Zelda.
