Lenovo’s new handset, the LePhone, sold 100,000 units by the end of June, the company confirmed on Friday.
The smartphone, which is powered by Android, went on sale in mid May. The company hopes to sell one million LePhones within a year.
The LePhone is Lenovo’s first smartphone since the Chinese PC Maker reacquired its mobile business company last November. The company sees the device as central to its worldwide mobile strategy.
Lenovo, however, says it wants to first “win” the market in China before it begins selling the handset overseas. The company has said that its mobile Internet hardware and services could become 10 to 20 percent of the company’s business over the next five years.
Sales of the LePhone follow the same pace as one of its competitors, the iPhone, which was officially released in China last fall. In comparison, 100,000 iPhones were officially sold in China after being on sale more than one month after its launch according to its service provider, China Unicom.
The sales of the LePhone come as Lenovo, China’s largest PC maker, reported this week a quarterly profit of US$54.9 million, a significant gain from the loss it suffered of $16 million one year ago.
