Despite its importance, Windows Update can also be an annoyance, as it regularly creates pop-ups to alert you to important updates that are available. You can configure Windows Update to provide you with less information, and you can even turn it off.
Step by Step
Step 1 Click Start, and then open the Control Panel.
Step 2 Click the Control Panel icon from the Classic View. If you are using the new Control Panel menu, click the Check for Updates text under the Security heading.
Step 3 From the Windows Update menu, you can view past updates and also see available optional and important updates.
Step 4 Click View update history to see all of the updates that have installed previously. Double-clicking any of the previous updates will produce detailed information, including the date and time installed, as well as information about the function the update performs. You can also get more information by clicking on the provided link.
Step 5 Click Change settings on the left side of the screen to configure the Windows Update options.
Step 6 Under the ‘Important updates’ heading, you can change the frequency of your computer’s updates. The drop-down menu gives you the option to install options automatically, to download updates but not install them, to only alert you about new updates, or to ignore updates altogether. You can also choose the date and time at which your computer performs these tasks.
Step 7 Below the ‘Recommended updates’ heading, you can choose whether to receive updates that are recommended but not important.
Step 8 Check the box under the ‘Who can install updates’ text to allow all users to install updates. Unchecking this box will permit only the computer’s administrator to install updates.
Step 9 The ‘Microsoft Update’ setting provides you with information about updates to Microsoft products other than Windows.
Step 10 When you have configured your Windows Update settings, click the OK button to return to the Windows Update menu.
Step 11 Use the Restore hidden updates link if you decided not to install updates when they became available and now wish to install them. From the ‘Restore hidden updates’ menu, select the update that you wish to install and click the Restore button.
