Now that we’re in the midst of football season, I need an app to monitor NFL scores. I find that it’s a lot more fun to follow a sport obsessively by keeping track of the performance of all the teams, rather than merely following how my home team is doing. Call it a need to look at the big picture. If you’re like me, you’ll want to grab Live Scores for Android (free), which presents all of this information in the most convenient manner possible.
Live Scores isn’t only for football; that’s just what I primarily use it for. It also works for NBA, NHL, and MLB results, as well as a select number of soccer leagues (for an app that monitors a more extensive array of soccer leagues, see my Soccer Livescores review).
The presentation of scores is simple and attractive. The app displays the schedule of game times for next week, too. For games that are currently in progress, the scores autoupdate every 30 seconds.
Live Scores also provides more details about a game than just the final score. Click on a game, and you can view details about who scored in what quarter (or inning, or half, or whatever), the stats of particular players, a screen with a play-by-play narrative, and a tab for setting any alerts you may want.
From the menu you can view each team’s standing, division, number of wins and losses this season, and a few other stats. You’ll also find a News section with articles, principally from ESPN, Yahoo, and other major networks. I found the load speed for these items to be on the slow side. In another area of the menu, you can set up alerts and switch to different sports.
Live Scores is an attractive package overall, with just about everything a sports fan could possibly want short of streaming video of the actual games.
