HP Updates Notebook Lineup, Including Touchscreen Netbook

HP is unveiling a slew of new and updated products at CES 2010, and notebooks are front and center in the company’s lineup. As with nearly every other major laptop maker, the new processors from Intel have spurred an almost complete top-to-bottom product refresh.
First up is the TouchSmart tm2 tablet, a 12.1″ multi-touch tablet meant to replace the TouchSmart tx2. The new model is smaller, lighter, and more consumer-oriented than the tx2 was. HP hopes their latest TouchSmart software will make the touchscreen a must-have item. The screen will support both finger gestures and pen input.
Speaking of touch, the HP Mini 5102 netbook will be the “world’s first touch-enabled netbook,” the company claims. The 10.1″ netbook features new Intel Atom processors and an optional Broadcom Crystal HD video decoder chip to smooth out those full-screen Hulu and YouTube videos. It’s a little pricey as netbooks go, but the touch screen and aluminum body are certainly novel features some are willing to pay for.
The Mini 2102 is HP’s lower-cost, more general consumer oriented netbook. It doesn’t feature the aluminum body or touchscreen option of the 5102, but still has the new Atom processors, integrated webcam, and 93% size keyboard.
Looking for a mobile workstation? HP’s got new products in its ProBook line, too. The 6440b (14-inch) and 6540b (15-inch) models feature a magnesium support structure but plastic outsides. It’s available with either the integrated Intel graphics or a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550. The tougher 8440w (14-inch) and 8540w (15-inch) models have an anodized aluminum finish over the magnesium alloy chassis. The 8x40w series uses Nvidia’s Quadro FX 380M mobile GPUs with Intel’s Core i7 mobile processors. Swap out that “w” for a “p” and you get the 8440p and 8450p, which have an aluminum finish and magnesium chassis with durability that meets military test standards. It will also feature Core i7 mobile processors and a choice of Nvidia NVS 3100 or Intel integrated graphics.
