Oracle announced Wednesday it plans to purchase Israeli startup Convergin, which makes software that lets telcos deliver services across multiple networks and platforms.
Terms were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close in the first half of this year.
Telcos have historically used intelligent networks (IN) to deliver service. Convergin’s service broker technology allows them to continue serving customers while phasing in next-generation IP (Internet protocol) platforms, Oracle said in a statement.
Oracle is currently weighing Convergin’s product road map and will update customers at a later date, according to a FAQ document released Wednesday.
Convergin’s customers include T-Mobile and SaskTel. Its competitors include Apptrigger, Aepona and OpenCloud.
Oracle’s move to acquire the company will further strengthen its hand in mobile applications. By purchasing Sun Microsystems, it gained Java Platform Micro Edition, a widely used mobile software development framework, as well as JavaFX, Sun’s RIA (rich Internet application) toolset for building applications across multiple devices.
The pending deal is the latest in a recent string of purchases by acquisition-happy Oracle, and the second this week alone. On Monday, the company said it planned to buy SOA (service-oriented architecture) management vendor AmberPoint.
