Final Fantasy XIII battle director Yuji Abe says Square Enix’s epic action-roleplaying game won’t be getting downloadable content after release because it’s already “the complete package.”
In an interview with Sony social media specialist Chris Morrell posted to the official PlayStation blog, Abe responded to questions about rumors of excised content, and its possibly return in the form of downloadable expansions or extensions.
“Regarding the DLC content, we feel that the final product is 100% enjoyable,” said Abe, calling the game as it stands a “complete package” and confirming Final Fantasy XIII publisher Square Enix has no plans to release DLC “at this time.”
As for the snipped content, Abe says the original quote was taken out of context.
“There are a lot of ideas that are brought to the table, and then the team takes the best ideas out of those, and the final product is polished that way,” he said. “There was content that were ‘ideas’ that didn’t make the final content, but the team isn’t looking to release that as downloadable content.”
Fair enough, though it’s kind of a head-scratcher. Why wouldn’t Square Enix hop on the downloadable bandwagon, when other publishers are making a killing offering everything from superficial Marketplace add-ons to full-blown expansions?
Perhaps they’re overextended: Once Final Fantasy XIII ships and the media honeymoon’s past, all eyes shift to the next two major installments, Final Fantasy Versus XIII Versus (for PS3 only) and its portable peer, Final Fantasy Agito XIII for the PSP.
