It may not have even occurred to you that your choice of browser could could impact your laptop’s battery performance. But these new findings suggest that in some cases using IE 8 could could extend your battery life by up to 40 minutes.
The research was conducted by AnandTech, who chose to ignore the more typical browser benchmarking tests; instead AnandTech focused on how Web browsers can impact battery life.
AnandTech conducted its tests using a variety of Gateway laptops running Vista and XP. AnandTech tested several browsers including Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, and discovered that in the majority of cases using Internet Explorer 8 resulted in longer battery life. So if these tests are anything to go by, using Internet Explorer over Firefox could give you an additional eight minutes of battery run time on average, Safari users out there switching to IE could gain more than a half hour in battery life.
