Verizon and Motorola aren’t pulling any punches when it comes to promoting its Droid smartphone. After the iDon’t series of advertisements bashing the Apple iPhone’s shortcomings, marketers have taken a different approach to stirring the pot: high-budget television ads that look more like trailers for this summer’s newest blockbuster.
In “Stealth,” a series of planes blast pods into an idyllic Americana landscape. Witnesses approach the steaming craters apprehensively and are greeted by capsules containing the Motorola Droid. “Drop Date 11/6/09” closes the ad.
Boy Genius Report first reported the ad, and claim that the clips will start airing this week.
The Motorola Droid, hailed as a dead-serious contender in the smartphone race, is powered by the impressive Android 2.0, and will retail for $199 as part of a two-year service contract with Verizon.
