Welcome to our new blog!
My name is David Coursey and most weekday mornings I will be posting two or three items offering a mix of tech news, commentary, and opinion of interest to people in small and medium-sized businesses.
The goal is to have these items written fresh and posted by about 9 a.m. Eastern Time, which is pretty darn early in California, where I live. My goal is to tell you both what is happening and what it means, and do so in a fun and occasionally controversial way.
Occasionally, I will be posting at other times of the day and plan to occasionally post on weekends as well. If there is something you would like me to write about, please contact me.
I have been writing about technology since before the introduction of the IBM PC in 1981. My byline has appeared in all the major tech publications (including a bunch that no longer exist). Much of my career was spent at Infoworld, PC Letter/DEMO, CNET, and eWEEK. This is my second time writing opinion for PC World and it is great to be back.
As a disclaimer, I do some commercial writing for companies that I will not be writing about here and have in the past done consulting and/or writing for a number of large companies, including Microsoft, HP, and Intel. If I need to write about something I have worked on for a client, I will mention it in the posting.
Personal biases?
I do most of my writing on a Macintosh, using Microsoft applications. I also use both Windows XP and Vista every day for business. I actually like Vista. My smartphone is an iPhone and I am shocked by the number of iPhone apps that I actually use.
I am a supporter of open source, but not a big Linux user. I do most of my searches using Google and do not care too much about what browser I use. Mostly Firefox and Safari, but also Internet Explorer and even Chrome, on occasion.
Other Things I Do
I have mentioned that I do writing for corporate clients. I also host a daily call-in talk program on KSCO 1080AM in Santa Cruz, CA. In my spare time, I blog about amateur radio and emergency communications at my n5fdl.com Web site. I also volunteer for cat rescue and other groups in my community.
