Microsoft was just the latest tech company betrayed by its graphic design and marketing departments. In swapping the head of a black man with that of a white man to bring an ad to Poland, the company has attracted plenty of negative publicity, ultimately forcing out an apology. But I’m inclined to agree with my colleague David Coursey, who says this is more a case of bad Photoshop than racism. After all, if Microsoft had taken an entirely new marketing photo and replaced the black man entirely, it probably wouldn’t have created so much hysteria. With that in mind, Microsoft is hardly the first tech company to look foolish due to bad Photoshop jobs. There are plenty of other examples, documented by Photoshop Disasters and others, where company marketing tries to pull a fast one on its customers, only to have keener eyes prevail.
Here are 10 examples of Photoshop disasters, blunders and foul-ups from tech companies or products.
