WalMart has started letting other retailers sell their products on its Walmart.com online store.
WalMart’s decision has added almost 1 million new products to its online store, the company said on Monday.
With this move, WalMart increases competition in the e-commerce market against players like eBay and Amazon.com, which also offer merchants their platforms and services to sell products.
However, WalMart is making it clear that it has hand-picked the retailers it has allowed to hawk their wares in its store, as opposed to eBay and Amazon.com, which have a much lower barrier to entry for merchants.
Merchants already in WalMart’s online marketplace include CSN Stores, eBags and Pro Team.
For orders placed with marketplace retailers, WalMart will take care of the checkout process, while the retailers will handle the fulfillment, including shipping and dealing with exchanges and returns.
