The Amazon Kindle 2’s strength is also its weakness today. One of the best aspects of the Kindle is its integrated Sprint EVDO service, and its ability to connect to the network wirelessly anywhere to access content (among other things). Except, of course, when it’s unable to connect to the network–like this afternoon.
At first, I thought the outage might be a local thing: We were having quite a rainstorm in San Francisco. But, my colleague in New York City couldn’t connect with his first-generation Kindle. And 50 minutes later it’s still not able to connect.
Whatever the source of outage, it’s not affecting all Sprint service. But the Kindle continues to have an issue.
Amazon issued this statement on the status of Kindle service: “There is currently a disruption in Kindle’s wireless connectivity as a result of a 3G network outage with Sprint. Sprint is working to resolve the outage as soon as possible.”

UPDATE: As of 4:30 p.m. PST, Amazon informed us the network was back up. And indeed, my Kindle 2 can connect again, although the storefront took longer than usual to load.
And, as of 6:18 p.m. PST, the network appears down again in San Francisco. Some users report the service is up in Washington, D.C., and down in Cleveland. A colleague in New York City reports it is working fine there.
