Japan’s Brother Industries will launch an electronic document reader with a 10-inch electronic paper display in June, it said on Thursday.
The SV-100B is designed for commercial and industrial users and comes with security features such as a four-digit PIN code to hamper unauthorized access and AES 128-bit encryption on stored data. Documents are stored in a proprietary format and can be transferred to the reader via SD memory card, Bluetooth or USB from a Windows PC application.
Brother intends the e-reader to be used in situations like factories, offices or by salespersons who typically need to access and refer to manuals and other data during their working day. With the ability to store over 10,000 pages of information on a 2GB memory card the 600-gram device could be a lot easier for workers to carry around depending on the amount of documents they typically need to refer to each day.
Electronic paper displays typically only consume power when they are changing the content of the display. The SV-100B’s battery will provide enough energy to display about 5,000 pages. The 150-dpi (dots per inch) screen supports four levels of grey and has a resolution of 1,200 pixels by 825 pixels. A new page is displayed in less than a second.
The SV-100B will go on sale on June 1 for around ¥140,000 (US$1,460).
